2014 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Don’t underestimate the power of this beast by the pretty exterior. Under the hood lurks a monsterous 5.8-liter V8 that delivers an impressive 662 horsepower and 631 pound-feet torque. The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 goes from 0 to 100 km in an astonishing 4.0 seconds. The Mustang does provide better visibility than the Camaro, but like all muscle cars, it’s still limited. Once inside the Mustang, it’s disappointing to say that the interior is a little on the plain side, especially when you consider the fully loaded GT500 tops out around $1500 more than the fully loaded ZL1. The Mustang GT500 offers Ford’s Sync infotainment system with touchscreen display. The Mustang GT500 offers a little bit more headroom and is lighter than the Camaro ZL1. You will not find a telescoping steering wheel inside the Mustang GT500.

2014 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1

The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 offers a very handsome exterior and is more striking to many because there are so many Mustangs on the road, but its not everyday you see a Camaro, so it tends to get a draw more attention. The ZL1 boasts a competitive 6.2-liter V8 that produces 580 horsepower and 556 pound-feet torque. The racy ZL1 makes the 0-100 km run in remarkable 4.4 seconds. The Camaro ZL1 comes with Chevy MyLink infotainment and OnStar. All reviewers seem to agree that the Camaro ZL1 offers better handling than the Shelby, hands down, giving credit to its fully independent suspension.

And The Winner Is…

While the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is a tough competitor and even gets the bragging rights for more power and slightly faster acceleration, the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is close behind in the acceleration department, and could win the track race on any given day. Since they are both arguably the fastest cars on the road, you will not lose face with either speedster. For me, it comes down to value and safety. When you purchase the top of the line Camaro ZL1, the interior feels more upscale and you know you’re in a top of the line model. The Mustang Shelby GT500′s interior isn’t much more impressive than the base model’s. As far as safety is concerned, the Camaro ZL1 offers far better handling and if you’re planning on driving your ZL1 at high speeds, which I am sure most people that buy a muscle car plan to do, this superior handling is a major advantage. With the ZL1′s price coming in lower than the Shelby’s, I am going to have to call the Camaro ZL1 the winner of this head-to-head competition.
